Haul – 2016 Winter Sale

So the 2016 winter sale started in early January. I am the kind of person who likes to save money and go shopping in the winter and summer sales, looking for things that I actually need, rather than just grabbing what I think looks cute, even if I know I will not wear it twice. I have bought some of my mostly worn/used items during sales and I know that also this year I got some very useful items for a bargain price.

The first item I want to talk about is my Timberland boots! You have no idea for how long I planned to get a pair of Timbs, but never really dared to because they cost about € 210, which is quite a lot. But I got very lucky when I was casually looking through Athlete’s World website and saw that the black boots were on sale for € 140. I immediately ordered them and I got them two days later. Let me tell you, they keep my feet extremely warm. They are indeed heavier than most boots, but that just shows how well-made they are since they serve their purpose. I think that I got value for my money. This is the link, but they only ship to Germany, the Netherlands, Italy, France, Spain, and Portugal.

Next, I went shopping in a big shopping centre near Rome and I decided to visit some of my favourite stores, like Zara and H&M.

From Zara I got one of the things I’ve been lusting after for about two months. It is a tote and it is the most gorgeous and minimalist black leather bag I have ever laid eyes on, in my price range. It reminds me of those old bags doctors would bring along to their patient’s houses. Anyways, the original price was € 40 and it was on sale for € 30. Here is the link.

Also from Zara, I bought an oversized grey t-shirt that I consider a basic top that I’ve wanted for ages and now I finally got it. IMG_4871

Right after Zara, I went to H&M and got myself a couple of basics. I live off of basic items and that is what I want my wardrobe to me made of.

I got a very long t-shirt from the Divided part of the store. It is a men’s shirt, but I will definitely wear it as a dress since it almost reaches my knees. I got it in beige but there are many more colours. Here is the link.

Also from the men’s section I got the best-fitting sweatshirt I could dream of. Men’s sweatshirts are so much more flattering than women’s and they cost less, from what I have noticed. This one is from the collection that David Beckham did with H&M and it looks great. It is in a sand colour and I love it. I unfortunately could not find it on their website. You can see it worn by me on my Instagram, right here.IMG_4878

Next, I went to Athlete’s World, to see if they had the Timbs I then ordered online. While I was there, I got a new sweatshirt. It is grey and looks worn. It has elbow patches and I really like it because it has a neckline similar to that of the sweatshirt above. The brand I got it from is called Down Up. It was € 3o and I got it for € 15. Here is the link.

Also from the same brand I got a pair of grey sweatpants. They fit just great, not too loose nor too tight. Again, they were € 30 and I got them for €15. Here is the link.

I managed to get to the Calvin Klein store in order to get a pair of jeans. When it comes to jeans, I am very very picky since most do not fit my body right. I tried on a first pair and they didn’t fit great. The second pair fit amazingly and I had to buy them. They are mid rise and I love that, since low rise is a no-no for me and high rise is a bit too retro.

Next stop was Tezenis, an Italian brand mostly known for underwear. They have also expanded to loungewear and casual clothing. They have plenty of basics to choose from and I in fact chose a cardigan and two basic tank tops.

I have also done some makeup shopping. I had run out of a couple of things and decided to use this sale to restock. First, I went to KIKO and got a full coverage concealer for my spots, a brow spoolie to groom my brows and a couple of matte nude nail polishes to start my basic nail colour collection. Then I got the Voluminous mascara from L’Oréal, which is the same one that Kim Kardashian West’s makeup artist, Mario, uses. Let me tell you, it is the best mascara I have ever used and I am not lying.

This was about it for shopping adventure.

Book Review – Arturo’s Island

I finally finished reading this book. It took me quite a long time since I had to pause it in order to read another book, which was an assignment from school. This book, which I should have read last summer, also for school, was a surprise.

I did not think I would like it, since it is not necessarily the type of book I would go for in a bookshop. I prefer horror, psychological thrillers and such. I am glad I had to read it because I ended up enjoying it. I would not put it in my top 5, but it was a pleasant read : it is what I would generally call a “break book”, which means that it is something that I would read between two more difficult works of literature.

It is a coming-of-age book : the plot is centred around Arturo’s story, whose mother died of childbirth, and his relationship with his mostly absent father. He lives alone, besides for the small periods of time his father is home, on the island of Procida, near Naples. He is an adventurer and his biggest ambition in life is to become a man just like his father. The narrative changes when Arturo’s father brings home his new wife, who turns out to be about one year older than Arturo himself. He tries to understand this new woman, and he finds a confidante in her, but only briefly. He slowly but surely falls in love with her and he starts hating her at the same time, especially when she gives birth to his half-brother. All throughout the novel we can see and feel Arturo grow first into a teenager and then into a young man, sensing his different attitude towards his step-mother and his father; regarding his father, he starts seeing him as less of a perfect hero and more as an annoyingly normal man who is simply getting older. Another theme that characterises the novel is Arturo’s desire to flee the island and visit the world, for which he has prepared by reading an immense amount of books.

This book did leave a mark on me, just like every book I have ever read. I felt sorry for Arturo, since he had to grow up without a mother figure and with an absent father, whom he mistakenly idolises. I felt attacked, as a woman, by some of his behaviours and at the same time I wanted him to find peace and love.

Overall, I would give it a 6,5 out of 10.

New Year’s Resolutions

Happy New Year, everybody! I hope you had a wonderful New Year’s Eve and I hope you have an even more wonderful new year, because I know you deserve it.

What I did on New Year’s Eve is pretty cliché : I got dressed up, dolled up and I went at a dinner party with a friend of mine and some of her family members, along with her boyfriend. That means I spent the night third-wheeling, since there were literally no men of my liking there. What is even more cliché is that I got slightly drunk; white wine and champagne kept me company while I denied any dish that had fish (about all of them). Little food + alcohol = not fun. But I do remember everything and I made it home alive and well.

Now, let’s talk about my 2016 resolutions…

As I do every year, I promise myself to study more and better. I do wish I had brighter grades, but I have to put in the work.

I also want to read more and more often. I can say I started okay since I have been reading a book since December and I am almost done with it (a review on it is going to be posted when I’ll finish it). I have so many books collecting dust in my library and I want to read them as soon as possible.

I want to be wiser with my money and my purchases. I have a list of items that I want and need to buy (they are mostly minimalistic and neutral) and I will not stray away from it.

I want to take better care of my body, my face and my hair. I haven’t been to the gym in two weeks (aka since Christmas break started) and I will start going again this Monday. Once I start going again I will not stop. My face has been acting strange, I have never had such frequent breakouts so I have to start eating cleaner and stop touching my face. My hair has been through a lot last year : I dyed it blonde and then I went back to dark brown, so of course it suffered quite a lot of stress and damage. This year = less heat and more care.

I want to visit more of Rome : this beautiful city is 40 minutes away from me and I still have to see so so many things. Even if I have to go alone, I’ll be equally happy, I have no time to wait around for people to have time for me, which brings me to my next resolution.

I want to stop caring so much. I am the kind of person who has very few friends (and by few I mean 2), so obviously I have a very close relationship with them, at least on my side. I consider them family. But these friends of mine have boyfriends and they put them before me, at all times. It annoys, but this year will be all about me and creating memories with and for myself. I am done caring.

This is about it. These resolutions are quite simple and common, but somehow the most complicated to get done.

Once again, I hope you have a great 2016. Last year was practice, now it’s game time.
