Stories from my childhood

I should start off by saying that I was and still am quite clumsy. Let’s change that to very clumsy. I have no idea why, I was just born like that. I used to always have bruises on my legs and I still do (from bumping against my bed and, occasionally, door frames). Matter of factly, I have plenty of scars on my knees to prove that I was wild.

Besides the very frequent stumbles and falls, the first big event in my life regarding my health was fracturing my right ankle. I was playing in front of the apartment building my grandparents used to live in and I tripped over a rock. A couple of days after that I remember seeing that rock again and looking at it with a lot of anger, for a 3 or 4 year old. Of course my ankle was put in a cast and I was supposed to enjoy bed rest. That did not happen since I would rather walk on one foot that stay in bed. I also happen to have some photos from a recital I did and you can clearly see the cast under my dress.

Look at that angelic face.

Since I could not stay still, I fractured my right ankle a second time and if I estimated correctly, I was in second grade. How did that happen, you might ask? Well, I was chasing after a boy, do not ask other questions, and I happened to trip on the only crack on the floor in the whole school. You can understand how lucky I have been over the years.

Next, I had pneumonia. That was honestly a pain. Since I did not want to stay in the hospital, grandma and I had to go every morning and evening for 30 days at the hospital to get my treatment injected. I did, however, manage to get some needle-less syringes to play with at home.

I, of course, also had Chickenpox but that was not as bad as I thought since I did not feel the need to scratch that much. I do still have one scar, a reminder of the first blister on my chest, which I thought was a mosquito bite. One problem that it brought was that I missed some of my Romanian classes and failed to understand the various tenses.

This next event is the one I am proud of. Yes, it is weird, but bear with me. My uncle, my cousin and I were at the park one day. Take into consideration that my cousin is quite younger than me and was at this stage a toddler. There was another girl that was playing on the swing; I should add that the swing was made of steel. Apparently, my cousin left her water bottle under said swing and she went to get it, obviously not understating the danger. I did, however, understand and I went and pushed my cousin out of the way and in that instant the swing hit me full force right where the hairline meets the forehead, in the middle. I blacked out for a couple of seconds and next thing I know, my uncle props me up on a bench and cleans my wound. I do not remember crying at this point, I was just in shock. He then took me to my family doctor which was nearby and I remember sitting in the waiting room with a gauze on my head worrying that I might have a big hole on my forehead. I remember desperately wanting to look in a mirror (typical me : insert hair flip emoji). The doctor then stitched me up without anaesthesia, since I was afraid of needles and that was the last thing I wanted. The result of all of that is 1. I look weird with a middle part and 2. I have a small scar a centimetre behind my hairline where hair does not grow, but it is barely visible. I am very proud of how my instincts acted that day.

Since then nothing major happened, except the occasional wrist or ankle sprain. I hope I kept you entertained by showing you the a part of clumsy/heroic me.

Outfit of the Day – March 27, 2016

This outfit of the day was requested by eileenpineapple, who saw my Reebok shoes post and asked if I could do an outfit with them. I already wanted to do one so that was just extra motivation.

So this day I went with my parents to Ostia, a city near the beach and near Rome. We had lunch there and we strolled around a bit. It was a particularly warm day so I decided to dress accordingly.

I wore a longish tank top from Tezenis, which is not available anymore. I also wore a pair of leggings from Calzedonia, which you can find here. I need to buy another couple of pairs since these are almost opaque, therefore not see-through. Over my tank top I wore a bomber jacket from H&M, and you can find it here. I really wanted the other colours too, but I have to be wise with my money. And of course I wore my Reeboks.

I did an all-black outfit simply because that is my style preference, but you can totally style the sneakers with jeans or sweatpants of other colours. Had I had a pink bomber jacket I would have worn it.

And now you get an extra pic that has me and the sea in it, because it was a good day.

Book Review – Madame Bovary

As you can see, I put the movie poster as the featured image again since my book was plain blue and not as pretty as Mia Wasikowska.

This book was a journey. Once again, as with some of the most recents reads of mine, it is set in the 19th Century. It starts with the background of Charles Bovary, a doctor, and how he ends up getting married to Emma, the daughter of one of his patients. She wants a more Parisian life, while he is a typical country doctor who loves the small town they live in. She starts dreaming about the high life and starts behaving like a rich lady, gaining debts upon debts. This book is famously infamous for its adulterous affairs. Emma ends up cheating on Charles with two men, Rodolphe and Léon. The first one leaves her, not ready for commitment, while Emma’s story with Léon is a bit more complicated. This book does not have a happy ending, but I will most certainly not spoil it for you.

Did I like this book? Yes, but not as much as others. It is one of the very few romance-themed books I have ever read and it is permeated with political views who come primarily  from one character, Homais, whom I ended up despising the most at the end of this book.

I would give this book a 7/10 rating. I will leave you once again with some quotes I liked :

“She wanted to die, but she also wanted to live in Paris.”

“Love, she thought, must come suddenly, with great outbursts and lightnings,–a hurricane of the skies, which falls upon life, revolutionises it, roots up the will like a leaf, and sweeps the whole heart into the abyss.”

“He had carefully avoided her out of the natural cowardice that characterizes the stronger sex.”

New Kicks

I finally bought my very first pair of sneakers that I will not use for working out. I am very proud of myself, because I changed my mentality : before deciding to buy these I would only want to buy heels, but sneakers are so much better for everyday use. When I saw these, I fell in love and decided to buy them.

These are the Reebok x FaceStockholm Classics. They come in different pastel colours and some metallic ones, but I ended up picking up the pink ones. This is the best colour ever, partially because it is still considered a neutral. You can wear these with other neutral colours, and a really good palette of neutral colours was made by elinaxblvck. Here it is.

Thank you for reading.

Until next time, Xx.

Outfit of the Day – March 7, 2016

I decided to do some Selfie-Outfit of the Days, since I do not have a blog-nor-Instagram boyfriend/husband. So please do forgive the poor quality.

This day was a normal and cold school day. It rained the day and night before, so my black Timberlands were a must. They did get dirty, but my feet were kept warm and that is the most important thing.

I also wore a pair of LiuJo black jeans. These used to fit me a lot better, but regardless I really love the colour and the way they fit in the back : they make your butt look heart-shaped, I promise. I bought them last season, so they are not around anymore. The only problem I have with these is that they are quite long and I had to have them shortened, so they do not really look very skinny now, but they are similar to boot cut jeans. Therefore, I only wear them either with heels or tucked in my boots.

I had a v-neck top from Tally Weijl under my sweater. That brand is very good at making basics. Most of my tank tops and undershirts are from them. You can find it here.

On top, I had a light black sweater but unfortunately I have no idea where it is from. I like it because it is slightly longer in the back so it covers my butt even when I am wearing leggings.

As far as outerwear goes, I was wearing a parka from a brand called Down Up, which is available here, but I cannot find the parka itself, so I suppose it got discontinued.

I hope you liked this post.

Shop Miss A haul and reviews, part 1

I found out about the Shop Miss A website from various youtube videos. The idea behind this website is that everything costs $1. I find that the price is so low mainly because of the extremely cheap packaging. It is super light and looks like children’s makeup. But we can glide over that, especially if the products are good. Since I bought 37 items, I am going to divide this haul in 2 parts. The first 19 items are listed below, and the links will be in the names themselves.

1. Iphone 6 Tempered Glass Pro Screen Protector

This is probably one of the items I am happiest about. It is a glass screen protector, a bit more resistant than the plastic ones. The application was very easy, although they do not give you anything to clean your screen with, but regardless of that, it did not leave any bubbles.

Score : 9,5/10

2. Knotted Zipper Chain Bracelet – Gold

The design is very nice, but it feels very low quality. It is featherweight and you can see, behind its fake gold paint, it is nothing but metal. I think I’ll probably wear it a couple of times, and I’ll try to make it work.

Score : 5,5/10

3. Cord Stitched Leather Bracelet – Black

This bracelet is very casual although, since it is for women, I think that they should make it go a bit tighter. I feel it is very loose on my wrist.

Score : 6/10

4. Golden M-10 Rifle Pen

I will admit, I got it because it is golden. I do not approve of real guns, but this pen is bad ass. It is of course made of plastic, so not high quality, but it writes pretty well. The ink is black and very fluid.

Score : 9/10

5. Modern Claw Ring – Gold

I was pleasantly surprised with this ring. I find it very pretty, although I think they should add a couple of sizes, since it is a bit loose for my fingers. It does not look cheap and it would be really nice stacked up with other rings.

Score : 8,5/10

6. L.A. Colors – Auto Lipliner – Rose Brown

This lipliner is much darker than what I thought but nonetheless, it is bomb. I really like it; it is very creamy and the colour is very “in” right now, you know that ’90s lip. The only advice I can give you is to not apply it as soon as you open it : try it on your hand first, to soften the very sharp tip and then apply it on your lips. Also, be careful when you fill your lips in, since you cannot really make a soft effect as you could with a pencil lipliner. Looking back, I should have bought more colours.

Score : 9/10

7. L.A. Colors – Moisture Lipstick – Taupe Envy

I love this lipstick. I am growing tired of matte liquid lipstick and going back to creamy classic formulas is amazing. I think that a better name for this colour would be Mocha. It is a very pretty rosy brown, but not too brown. Nicely pigmented.

Score : 9/10

8. L.A. Colors – Purely Matte Lipstick – Caramel Creme

I love this lipstick too. It is less shiny than the one above, but it is still just as creamy. It dries of semi-matte and the colour is a medium dark pinky nude, some sort of half sister to the lipstick above.

Score : 9/10

9. Kleancolor Foundation Brush

I never really got this sort of brush, simply because everyone said that it leaves streaky marks, but for $1 I thought I would give it a try. It surprised me. It does not feel low quality and it barely leaves any hairs on my face. The coverage that it allows is medium, better than what my fingers could ever do. You just have to blend and blend.

Score : 8/10

10. Mineral Compact Powder – Lighter Tones #1

The one thing that bothers me about this powder is that it is too yellow-toned for me, since I have neutral tones. It is not that noticeable, but still, it would be better if they offered a wider selection. The packaging of this powder is the only thing that arrived broken, being made of very thin plastic.

Score : 6/10

11. L.A. Colors – Liquid Eyeliner – Black

I really like this liquid liner. It is very black and the wand is long and thin, perfect for winged liner. It says on the site that it is water resistant and I have noticed that it hasn’t budged. I am very  very pleased with this. It reminds me of the NYC liquid liner.

Score : 10/10

12. Magic finish Luminizing Eyeshadow – #4

This is actually a baked and very shimmery eyeshadow, but if you get the shade #4 you can use it as a highlighter, which is what I do. It is massive in size and very shimmery. I really like the finish it gives and it quite neutral, not too rosy nor too golden.

Score : 9/10

13. Eyeshadow Primer – Matte

This really surprised me. It is not patchy and it holds eyeshadow in place for a very long time. I have noticed less fallout. Of course, after you apply it you have to set it with a skin tone eyeshadow or just with your regular powder so that darker eyeshadow goes on smoothly. The quantity is also great. The colour is a bit lighter than my skin tone, but all in all it is quite good.

Score : 9/10

14. Elf Essential Eyelash Curler

I actually do not have the curler anymore, since I gifted it to a friend of mine. I did not like it since it was quite wobbly and I felt very unsure using it. I prefer the one I have had for 5 years and that actually curls my lashes incredibly well.

Score 0/10

15. Elf Essential Lipstick – Seductive

I love this lipstick. I love the colour, I love the texture and I love how creamy and luscious it is. I can totally understand why it is called “Seductive”. The one flaw is the packaging, which is very low quality and wobbly.

Score : 8,5/10

16. American Eyecon Wet/Dry Baked Eyeshadow – Toffee

I do not understand why this eyeshadow is called “Toffee” (I think it should be called “Gunmetal”), but regardless of that it is a very nice shadow with which you can create a very nice smokey eye. It almost looks duo-chrome, purple-brown and icy blue. Again, the packaging is the problem. Below you have the dry and the wet swatches. When you wet it, the texture becomes very much like the one of a liner.

Score : 8/10

17. Elf Essential Blending Eye Brush

I cannot express in words how much I love this brush. Besides the occasional strand of hair shed, it is so so good at blending and also keeping the pigmentation. Love it.

Score : 9/10

18. L.A. Colors – Eye Shadow Pot – Bare Mauve

This is a very pretty shadow, although quite powdery. I like using it as a base for all of my shadows or just using it in combination with a medium dark brown in the crease. It is not mauve at all, it is a warm sandy colour with a very discrete satin finish.

Score  : 8/10

19. L.A. Colors – Eye Shadow Pot – Terracotta

As for texture, the same goes for this shadow. It is beautiful as a transition colour and again, it is quite warm. I love using it in the crease. I find these shadows (this one and the one above) quite good quality.

Score : 8/10

This is it for Part 1 of this haul. I hope you found it useful.
